About the Travel Care Code Initiative

The Travel Care Code is an initiative of a network of academics and professionals committed to encouraging responsible travel. We are committed to supporting travelers act in ways that minimize negative impacts of tourism and enhance the benefits of tourism in destination communities.

The Travel Care Code initiative works with destination communities in spreading the message of the importance of responsible travel and being a good guest. We provide a variety of tools and resources to destination marketing organizations and tour operators to support responsible travel.

Leadership Team

An Associate Professor in Purdue’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Dr Jonathon Day has over 20 years’ experience in destination management. An award winning marketer, Dr Day has worked with destinations marketing organizations in Australia, New Zealand and the United States. Dr Day is committed to ensuring tourism is a force for good in the world. Dr Day’s research interests focus on sustainable tourism, responsible travel, and strategic destination governance within the tourism system. He is interested in the role of business in solving grand challenges through corporate social responsibility programs and social entrepreneurship.

Pat Long, Professor Emeritus, Leeds School of Business, University of Colorado at Boulder. Founding Director of the Centers for Sustainable Tourism at CU-Boulder and East Carolina University.

Whitney Knollenberg is an assistant professor in the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management at North Carolina State University. She studies the role of leadership in the planning, policy, and partnerships that support sustainable tourism development. She has explored these relationships in the contexts of tourism advocacy, rural tourism development, and volunteer tourism. Whitney led the initial development of the Travel Care Code as a Masters student at the Center for Sustainable Tourism at East Carolina University.

Chris Adams has worldwide experience in tourism, new technology and new media.  Chris is Head of Research and Insights. and GM for Miles South Pacific at Miles www.milespartnership.com, the world’s largest destination marketing company with 90+ city, state and national tourism clients in North America, Asia and the South Pacific and Hotel clients in the US and South Pacific.  Chris spreads his time between Miles North American operation and the South Pacific division based in Auckland, New Zealand.

Chris has also served as CEO of a New Zealand Convention and Visitor Bureau (Destination Coromandel www.thecoromandel.com), worked at Newmans Tours (one of the largest inbound tour operators in the Asia – Pacific) and as Assistant to the General Manager at Sky TV in London (www.sky.co.uk).

Chris is has been involved for many years as a volunteer board member for the US Centre for Sustainable Tourism www.sustainabletourism.org  and the Travel Care Code  – www.travelcarecode.org which aims to minimize the impact of Travel on communities and the environment.  He is also a Visiting Professor at the South East Tourism Society’s “Marketing College” at the University of North Georgia each year and on the Research Advisory Board for the US Travel Association. Chris is a leading speaker and thought leader in destination and tourism marketing in both North America and the South Pacific.

David Allen Moss

David Allen Moss is a lifelong creative and passionate arts advocate. An enterprising media entrepreneur, creative director, and brand strategist, David is Founder and President of MossMedia, and serves as Chief Creative Officer of Evergreen Podcasts. For nearly 20 years, he’s has been producing breakthrough hospitality brand experiences for iconic names like Wynn Las Vegas, The Cleveland Browns, Ritz Carlton, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, and American Greetings.

Moss has served in executive leadership and interim director roles at Purdue University, Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, Ingenuity Festival, and Cleveland Institute of Art. David is also host of the popular creative mindfulness podcast, Wake Up Call, in partnership with the visionary global non-profit, Creative Mornings. An accomplished bass-vocalist, he rounds out his creative pursuits with two original music projects, while serving on a number of cultural and professional boards in Greater Cleveland.
